The first full day we arrived was used for setting up and screening. We screened approximately 25-30 patients. Although this seems to be a relatively low number, it always starts off on the low side on the maiden mission. As we continue to return to Antigua, the numbers will grow. The children who were screened and not admitted for surgery are usually too young, so they will return for the following year or whenever they are old enough. The team has already made plans to go back to Antigua, so these families will hopefully have plans to return when we do! The ages of the patients operated on ranged from 6 to 19 years old.
During screening I helped Dr. Cheney take photos of all of the patients screened. Today before we started screening, Dr. Hadlock gave an information session with the logistics and medical details of the surgery with a question and answer session for the families.
